THEATER LIGHTS SHINE BRIGHT
Ceremony Turns On Saenger Theater Lights
Canal Street packed a crowd on Thursday evening for an exciting ceremony that turned the landmark Saenger Theater marquee into a shining beacon of recovery. After painting a picture of the future of Canal Street, Mayor C. Ray Nagin did the honors of flipping a switch to turn on the lights, followed by cheers and clapping from the audience.
City and state officials joined project managers, architects and members of the Canal Street Development Corp., the city agency overseeing the ambitious $38.8 million restoration, for a VIP tour of the building. They received a firsthand look at how some of the restoration work would take place, including the elaborate painting and interior décor.
The construction schedule will begin in the first quarter of 2010 and Saenger to host its first performance in the fall of 2011.
