| CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TO RELEASE BIDS FOR ARMSTRONG PARK PHASE 3 |
The City of New Orleans is pleased to announce an Invitation to Bid for Armstrong Park Phase 3 located at 901 N Rampart St. Armstrong Park sustained damage from both Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav, including damage to the park's storm sewer system, lagoon, pedestrian bridges, and the underground electrical system. Extensive flooding caused exterior fencing and landscaping damage.
Improvements in this phase will provide upgraded accessibility to the disabled, improve community accessibility, improve pedestrian circulation to the park, adds landscaping and beautification, and will also repair the Congo Square fountain. This project shall include improvements to the Louis Armstrong Park Roots of Music Cultural Garden. Improvements include some of the following:
- Construction of a pedestrian plaza that links six new and two relocated sculptures within Louis Armstrong Park
- Renovations to the Congo Square Fountain
- Relocation of the Aqueduct Fountain
- Minor utility adjustments and landscaping
The 32-acre historic park located in Treme, near the French Quarter was created to honor New Orleans' favorite son, the great Louis Armstrong, and to preserve the site of historic Congo Square. Preserving the historic meeting space of slaves in the 1800s and celebrating the undeniably rich jazz history of New Orleans, Armstrong Park is a site of cultural reflection and a commitment to continuing the spirit of the historic Treme community.
"We look forward to more improvements of the park and we hope all phases will encourage visitors and the community to view and use this historic space", says Parks and Parkways Director, Ann McDonald.
