CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TO RELEASE BID FOR LATTER LIBRARY ROOF
The City of New Orleans is pleased to announce an Invitation to Bid for the Milton H. Latter Memorial Library located at 5120 St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans. This Contract comprises the roof replacement to include:

  • A tear-off to deck on both the Main Building and Carriage House

  • Structural repairs will be identified and damaged members replaced during construction
The roofing materials include 13" Spanish S clay tiles and clay siding tiles, built-up roofing, and KEE roofing.

Latter Library is a historic landmark on St. Charles Avenue in uptown New Orleans. Described as a Renaissance Revival style mansion, the house features hand-carved Flemish-style woodwork at the mantels, mirrors and chandeliers imported from Czechoslovakia, and South American mahogany at the paneling and grand staircase.

In 1948, formally occupied as a family home, the property was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Latter, who sought to transform the mansion into a public library as a memorial to their son Milton, who lost his life at Okinawa during World War II. The library was dedicated on October 31, 1948. With the exception of a period of major renovations from 1983-1985, the mansion has remained in use as a library since.

The Milton H. Latter Memorial Library circulates over 119,000 books each year. Its' collection includes nearly 50,000 books and magazines. The Basement and Carriage House hosts the operations of the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library, who collect, sort and sell donated books to support the library.
