CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TO RELEASE BID PONTCHARTRAIN PARK

The City of New Orleans is pleased to announce an Invitation to Bid for Pontchartrain Park, located at 5721 Press Drive, 6455 Press Drive and 4820 Hayne Blvd (District D).This project shall consist of improvements to the existing concession building, baseball field high mast lighting, basketball courts, bleachers and associated concrete pads, baseball dugouts, playground areas and associated equipment.

Work on this facility will include some of the following:

  • Removal and replacement of dugout and entire slab

  • Replacement of some areas of park fencing

  • Removal and installation of lighting

  • Demolition and reconstruction of concession building accessories
The park was developed by the Parks and Parkways Commission on the Lakefront Canal in the 1950's. The 200-acre park providede a 9-hole golf course, a picnic area and lagoons. In 1957, the golf course was expanded to an 18-hole course and in the following years, tennis courts, basketball courts and a baseball field were added. The golf course was renovated and renamed in 1979 in honor of Joseph Bartholomew, Sr., the designer of the course and first African-American golf pro.

The park has suffered significant damage due to Hurricane Katrina. Wind and flood damage shattered light covers, missing mast light heads and damaged light poles, a missing electronic scoreboard, and dented baseball fields. Tennis courts are now deteriorated from the storm and water fountains are damaged and have missing parts.
