NEW ORLEANS HEALTH DEPARTMENT RECEIVES FIRST H1N1 VACCINE

The City of New Orleans Health Department received its share of the 1.4% of manufactured H1N1 vaccine on October 26th. Vaccinations are available at any of the following three City of New Orleans Health Department Clinics: New Orleans East Family Medical Center, 5640 Read Blvd, Suites 540/550, New Orleans, LA 70127, 658-2750 Edna Pillsbury Clinic, 2222 Simon Bolivar Ave, New Orleans, LA 70113, 658-2826 Ida Hymel Clinic, 1111 Newton Street, New Orleans, LA 70114, 658-2550 These medical facilities are open Monday through Friday, between 8:00am and 4:00pm. Dr Joia Crear-Perry, Chief of Clinical Services for the City of New Orleans Health Department, said, "We will continue to provide H1N1 vaccines to the citizens of New Orleans as long as our supply lasts. We ask that each of us are mindful of the people most vulnerable for the virus and allow them to get the shots first." The key populations include those who are at higher risk of disease or complications, those who are likely to come in contact with novel H1N1, and those who could infect young infants. Immunizations are recommended for the following groups: pregnant women, people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months old, healthcare and emergency medical services personnel with direct patient contact, children 6 months through 4 years of age, and children 5 through 18 years of age who have chronic medical conditions. More information will be made available by the City of New Orleans Health Department when additional supplies of the vaccine arrive. In the meantime, Health Department officials continue to urge New Orleanians to get the seasonal flu vaccine.
