Mission Statement
Creating a cleaner City is a top recovery priority. Mayor Nagin and the City Council Sanitation committee have taken bold steps to ensure that we have:
- Clean neighborhoods in which our citizens and children can live and play.
- Solid waste services that are collected and disposed in a safe, efficient, environmentally sound, and cost-effective manner
- Enforcement and Sanitation Codes that are designed to eliminate illegal dumping and littering.
Department of Sanitation Objectives- Plan and direct all activities related to garbage collection, disposal, recycling, and street cleaning in a manner consistent with environmental safety standards;
- Ensure compliance of local, state, and federal regulations for solid waste collection and disposal;
- Fulfill Charter responsibilities and address environmental and neighborhood concerns while balancing fiscal impacts.
Notice: Although the S&WB bills the sanitation fees, the City is responsible for management of the Sanitation program, including registration for the new garbage cans. You should direct your inquiries regarding problems with the City's garbage can registration website to either the City's webmaster or the Department of Sanitation by calling (504) 658-3800.

SUSPENSION OF RECYCLING DROP-OFF EVENTS FOR 2009
The City of New Orleans has discontinued all Recycling Drop-Off Events for 2009. The Recycling Foundation of Baton Rouge that sponsored the previous events can no longer provide the monthly service free of charge. The downturn in the economy has impacted the market for recyclable materials. The reduction in the demand for used paper, plastic bottles, glass and metal cans has prompted prices to drop sharply causing a back-log of recyclable materials at the processing plants. Due to the City of New Orleans’ budget constraints in 2009, the City has no funds to provide the service in 2009. The City of New Orleans would like to thank the Recycling Foundation of Baton Rouge for their support and for sponsoring past Recycling Drop-Off Events in our City. The Recycling Foundation sponsored over 15 events in 2007 and 2008, and collected over 160 tons of recyclable materials. Also, the City would like thank the many volunteers who helped the events in 2007 and 2008. There are two local companies providing curbside collection of recyclable materials at a monthly fee. Persons interested in paying for recycling services may contact the companies listed below for more information. Phoenix Recycling of New Orleans (504) 373-6521 PhoenixRecyclingNOLA.com
