New Orleans Emergency Medical Service

Welcome to the official New Orleans EMS website! As the sole 9-1-1 EMS provider for the City of New Orleans, the men and women of New Orleans EMS take tremendous pride in providing superior state-of-the-art prehospital emergency care with progressive regional protocols to the citizens and visitors of New Orleans and Orleans Parish. The department is lead by Dr. Jullette Saussy who serves as Director and Medical Director and Carl Flores, Acting Deputy Director.

New Orleans’ demographics are quite unique. The City is roughly 350 square miles with 170 of those miles being water. The City’s post Katrina population is estimated to be over 275,000 residents. Pre Katrina, NOEMS answered over 55,000 calls for service. Current day call volume predictions estimate our 2008 total to reach 50,000 calls for service.

New Orleans EMS is comprised of just over 100 full time employees including 3 Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physicians, over 60 paramedics and 45 EMT-basics.  NOEMS operates between 7-11 ALS units around the clock. In addition, EMS operates an ALS light rescue truck which is the primary vehicle extrication unit for the City.

In addition to serving as the primary 9-1-1 provider for the City of New Orleans, NOEMS is tasked with covering large City events which attract millions of visitors each year. NOEMS provides coverage for Mardi Gras, French Quarter Festival, BCS Bowl Games, Bayou Classic, Essence Festival, New Year’s Eve and several other large scale events.
