EMS Community Outreach |
New Orleans EMS is proud to unveil their new Community Outreach Program.
The focus of this program is preventative health and safety education for the citizens of Orleans parish. The overall goal is to develop and implement interactive programs to aid in the mission of saving lives. New Orleans EMS believes that prevention is key in this mission, and strives to supply the public with the knowledge and tools necessary to stay safe and healthy.
EMS T.A.S.K. Force
New Orleans EMS believes children are one of our community’s most important resources. Accidents and unintentional injuries claim the lives of over 5,600 children under the age of 14 every year. The New Orleans EMS T.A.S.K. Force’s goal is “Teaching Awareness and Safety to Kids“. Our division believes that smart kids are safe kids, and strives to educate and empower children of all ages to prevent injuries and react appropriately in the case of an emergency.
Currently, the T.A.S.K. Force is available to any child care center, school, or organization for children within Orleans Parish. The T.A.S.K. Force offers ambulance show-and-tells and safety talks covering such topics as using the 911 system, bicycle and pedestrian safety, safety around the home, and basic first aid. Programs run for approximately an hour, and can be tailored to meet your organization’s specific needs.
Douglass High School’s Public Safety Academy
New Orleans EMS is currently working with the Recovery School District by participating in the Public Safety Academy at Douglass High School. Through the academy, freshmen students are exposed to the local EMS system and are given an opportunity to see how the division operates on a day to day basis. For students who choose to focus on EMS, New Orleans EMS has pledged to act as a mentor and give them a strong framework for entering the field of emergency medicine. The division works one-on-one with teachers and students to show the importance of the EMS field and the opportunities working in the field can afford. Through a partnership with Delgado Community College, these students will ultimately complete the EMT-Basic program and receive college credit during their senior year.

COMING SOON
Family & Friends CPR and First Aid for Children Classes
These classes will eventually be offered to the public at large. The goal of these classes is to prepare people with little or no medical background to provide CPR and basic first aid in an emergency situation before help arrives. These classes have no prerequisites and will be open to anyone who wants to learn more about CPR and first aid.
HeartSaver AED Course
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading killer of adults over the age of 40. Sudden cardiac arrest accounts for an estimated 250,000 deaths annually. As AEDs (automated external defibrillators) become more common in public places, the community is encouraged to learn how to react in the event of a cardiac emergency. The HeartSaver AED course will be offered to anyone wishing to familiarize themselves with CPR and AED usage.
Fall Prevention in the Home
New Orleans EMS is currently developing a program targeting senior citizens and individuals with limited mobility. The CDC estimates that more that one third of adults over 65 fall each year in the United States. Falls and the resulting injuries are the number one cause of trauma related deaths among the elderly. This program’s goal will be to identify problem areas around the home that increase the likelihood of falls and take the proper steps to correct any identified problems.
