Garden District
View District Map
The Garden District officially became a local historic district on July 25, 2007. The Study Committee’s report on the proposed Garden District local historic district was undertaken at the request of the New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commissioners, the Garden District Association, and members of the community. The report was drafted as required by State Act 804 in an effort to determine if the area generally bounded by Carondelet Street, Jackson Avenue, Magazine Street and Louisiana Avenue meets the criteria to become a local historic district. The study committee was composed of the following members: Westervelt T. Ballard, Beau Baumgardner, Mary Lou Christovich, Terry Creel, Clay Farnet, Vaughan Fitzpatrick, William F. Grace, Jr. and Sandra S. Shilston, all appointed by Mayor Morial and ratified by the City Council. This area is one of the most architecturally and historically significant in the city. Due to the limits set forth by State Act 1073 which allow for HDLC jurisdiction only over new construction, demolition and demolition by neglect, within the proposed boundaries, the Garden District has been made a Partial Control District. The HDLC will be able to provide design review of proposed new construction, and a public hearing for all proposed demolitions. The HDLC will also be able to cite property owners for failure to maintain their buildings properly, preventing further deterioration and potential blight.
